Luke AFB Today
Luke Air Force Base is the Air Force’s largest fighter wing and only active duty F-16 training base in the world. The F-16 is scheduled to remain in service with the Air Force through 2025.
Arizona is recognized as a national model in its protection of military facilities from encroachment by approving innovative state laws. We must be proactive in supporting efforts to protect and continue the mission at Luke Air Force Base (AFB) – now and into the future.
In addition to protecting our nation’s defense and being an economic asset to the state, Luke AFB has a profound impact in our community – base personnel volunteer more than 100,000 hours annually at local schools, churches, youth sports leagues and non-profit organizations.
The military is the largest employer in Arizona, employing more than 83,000 active duty, reserve and civilians at installations statewide. In times of economic downturns, military installations provide unsurpassed economic stability. Luke AFB alone contributes more than 7,000 jobs and $2.17 billion annually to our local economy.
Luke AFB also manages 1.1 million of the 2.7 million acres that comprise the Barry M. Goldwater Range in southern Arizona. The Air Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force Reserves and the Arizona National Guard use the Goldwater Range for training critical to the defense of our nation. The range was established in 1941 to train U.S. Army Air Corps pilots for World War II.
